Three issues important to East and West Urbana
1. Information on the Proposed Royer Architectural District
On August 1, 2007, Alderman Dennis Roberts (Urbana City Council, Ward 5) and Ilona Matkovszki presented a proposal to the Urbana Historic Preservation Commission for the establishment of a special architectural district in downtown Urbana and the adjacent residential areas in east and west Urbana, named the "Joseph W. Royer Architectural District." It passed unanimously.
Dennis and Ilona designed a beautiful color brochure, "Joseph W. Royer Architectural District", which celebrates the architectural genius of Joseph Royer, Urbana's premier architect. The proposed district includes the oldest section of Urbana's historic downtown and connects the east and west Urbana neighborhoods. A map and color photos indicate the streets and buildings designated by the district.
This one page document explains why we feel this district should be created and highlights how it can be used to bring visitors, economic development, and general public interest to Urbana.
Please note that the proposed "Joseph W. Royer Architectural District" does not establish any special restriction, financial burden, or design review or directive on any property, business, or citizen within its boundary!
