Requesting a mySQL Database
Prairienet offers PHP and mySQL for those Information Providers who wish to make
use of a database on their Web site.
For information on the custom database programming services offered by Prairienet's
Community Information Systems Group, please email Prairienet Tech Suport at
.
Who May Request a mySQL Database
- Standard and Advanced Web Hosting accounts may request a mySQL database for a one-time setup fee of $25.
The database will be created once the one-time setup fee of $25 has been received.
Please make the check payable to Prairienet and mail to: Prairienet, P.O. Box 17371, Urbana, IL 61803.
Please note in a cover note and/or on the memo line that the this is fee for database setup.
- Individual membership accounts, Basic Web Hosting accounts and organizations receiving
fee waivers are not eligible. Exceptions may be made in the case of students working on
community-based Web projects under an instructor's supervision.
- We reserve the right to deny requests. At our discretion, an additional yearly database hosting fee may apply in the case of
large and/or higher-traffic databases.
What is Expected of the Database Administrator
- The Database administrator must have sufficient experience with PHP/mySQL
database programming to be able
to work independently. Beyond basic setup and systems support,
PHP and mySQL are not supported by Prairienet Tech Support.
- The database administrator is responsible for ensuring that grants and privileges for users
of the database follow standard database practice of granting the minimum privileges needed to
accomplish tasks. Under no circumstances should the dbadmin login and password be used by the database application
for routine public access.
- The database administrator should exercise care when selecting and installing
free Open Source applications to make sure that they meet basic security and
database design standards.
- The database administrator is responsible for monitoring for security updates to installed applications.
Failure to update promptly when a security update is available can provide access to hackers who scour
the Web looking for vulnerable sites. In the event that hackers or spammers exploit a vulnerable application
due to the database administrator's failure to keep an application up-to-date, the sponsoring organization
will be billed for any systems staff time required to diagnose and correct the problem. See Fine Print below.
- Database administrators are encouraged to make
periodic backups of their own database.
Prairienet cannot be responsible for corrupted or lost data. Although Prairienet observes
best practices when it comes to system backups, these are made in the event
entire servers have to be restored following a system-wide problem.
Selective restores are very labor-intensive and we cannot guarantee that databases or
lost data can be retrieved from backups.
The Fine Print
The database administrator is responsible for the
security of any database application installed on Prairienet. Should your
account's site become the entry point for hackers or spammers, your organization
will be billed at a rate of $50 per hour for systems staff time spent
diagnosing and correcting any problems on Prairienet systems caused by
hackers or spammers who gained entry via your Web site.
Prairienet Tech Support reserves the right to to take on the role of database
administrator in order to examine the database and the code for diagnostic purposes.
We also reserve the right to deactivate a database without notice:
- it is judged to be using too many systems resources
- it is interfering with the function of other database applications on the system
- it is deemed to present a security risk
- if it is in violation of Prairienet Acceptable Use or Commercial Use policies.
Additionally, the Prairienet Tech Support reserves the right to remove a
database with due warning in cases where:
- a database has been inactive for a year or more
- a database is without an active database administrator
- the database administrator address does not respond to email queries
within a reasonable timespan (5-7 business days)
- the database administrator does not or cannot make database application changes that
were requested for security or usage reaons.
