Project Summary
Purpose of Lab
- The lab will be open and available to any person in the community that wishes to use the lab.
- There was a lab set up in the church across the street in the past that has since fallen out of use. This lab was used mainly by the congregation. Hopefully, with this new lab across the street from the church itself, St. Mark’s will be able to provide further outreach to more of the community.
- With the lab we will build, St. Mark’s hopes to earn a grant to make their lab even better.
- The lab room will also be used as an educational space. Thus, we will leave room for a blackboard and space in the middle for additional tables.
Physical Lab Space
- The lab space will include 15 computers on a peer-to-peer network.
- The computers will be situated on 6-foot long tables around the perimeter of the room with one station at the front of the room for the supervisor of the lab.
- In terms of electricity, there are two wall circuits and six circuits that come out of the floor. We will be using the two wall circuits plus one of the floor circuits.
- Any unused floor circuits will be reported to the site coordinator so they can be removed by the church if they wish.
- There is some old wiring from the previous owners of the building, but it will be necessary for us to re-wire for the network and rebuild the network from the ground up.
Computers and Software
- We will restore 15 Pentium III computers for St. Mark’s.
- Harddrive size on each computer will be 3-4 GB.
- Computers will be internet-ready.
- We will install Open Office, but Pat and Delores will use eBay to try and find affordable licenses for Microsoft Office.
- Windows 98 will be installed on the computers.
- Typing software will be installed on the computers.
- Some games will be installed on the computers.
Things to Find Out
- Are card playing games OK? Are there any restrictions on types of games?
- Is there certain edu-tainment software that should be considered?
- Research religious-themed games
