Problems and Solutions

Set up at our site was going quite smoothly until our networked computers would not ping each other. We did the following trouble shooting:

  1. looked at settings.
  2. ping renew/release
  3. checked the switch to make sure the lights were on and the switch was reading.
  4. took new switch and connected two computers together through the switch.
  5. ENTER MARTIN
  6. repeated trouble shooting.
  7. set up new switch with laptop. The laptop could ping the computer but the computer could not ping the laptop.
  8. laptop name was “cmd” not “command”
  9. the ethernet cables were ok because on the switch, it was trying to send. Ping tried to work but it blinked for send then did not receive.
  10. Martin asked “What did you download?” “The updates,” we answered. Martin deleted the network driver on two computers then restarted. The computer found the network driver because the drivers were on the network card.
  11. “Curiouser and curiouser,” said Martin.
  12. NEW DAY
  13. deleted Spy Dr., Spybot, and Clamwin. Tried pinging after each delete. Then deleted each Window update and tried pinging after each.
  14. Camilla’s Aunt Ann came and helped us think it through. She questioned the server but the server settings shouldn’t matter because it is an LAN.
  15. server disconnected from switch.
  16. tried looking for deeper settings options but couldn’t find anything that applied.
  17. Pinging from laptop to computer with new switch. Same thing happened.
  18. What to do???????????????????
  19. Not ethernet cords because one way pining worked.
  20. C”S BRILLIANCE
  21. figured which cables connected to the two trial computers and put the ethernet cables in new switch (from old switch) and pinged and IT WORKED We all smiled.

Earlier in the semester

C’s Fire

When C. was working on one of our computers, it caught fire because there was too much RAM in the motherboard and it overloaded.

Other Problems

Four of our computers (including three Dell’s) had no sound drivers for the sound card so we couldn’t attach speakers. All the computers had CD’s in front so headphones could attach.

We also searched for video drivers and looked for HD’s that worked.
