Lessons Learned
Password problem
On packing day it was discovered that one of the computer’s passwords was unknown and that anti virus software could not be installed. We were able to determine the password on-site.
Lesson Learned
Either take the security risk of writing down all passwords or make sure all group members know a computer’s password. We almost had to reinstall an OS because of a simple oversight.
Extra software
During our site survey Don suggested we put as much additional software on the computers as we saw fit. He gave us few limitations or guidelines for these additions. On the day of set-up the computer class instructor was not positive about the fact various programs such as Real Player, I-tunes, Adobe Acrobat, etc. were installed. He was concerned they would slow down the machines.
Lesson Learned
Try to get the opinions of as many people who will be using the computers. This situation is an ideal and may lead to more complications (i.e.-differing opinions) than it is worth. It is important to always remember that installing software is something that sites can do on there own later. Also, it is important to remember these are the site’s computers, so they can choose to uninstall as they choose.
Anti-virus software
Since our computers were brand new and top of the line we assumed that anti-virus software was included in the security package already installed. After hearing Martin’s lecture we checked and found out there was none on the computers.
Lesson Learned
Never assume something is included on a computer simply because they are new and have a new operating system.
Bad Hub
During our set-up we discovered that the hub provided by the site needed to be replaced. We initially assumed that there was something wrong with the WAN because it had been down the previous week.
Lesson Learned
Always remember to use problem solving skills and don’t immediately conclude that a problem is overwhelming and can’t be fixed with your skill set.
Business Software
Don requested business software, but was never specific with what he wanted. We discovered that we could not find much free, valuable software for our site.
Lesson Learned
Never promise something can be found for free when your not sure what your looking for and not sure about the availability of free software.
