History of Organization

(1). Summit Ave. Baptist Church has been a part of East St. Louis for roughly 56 years. For the last 33 years, they have created and supported a variety of educational programs.

(2). The present pastor of Summit Avenue Baptist Church is Reverend Dennis Rogers. According to Kevin Dean, a volunteer who helps to maintain and organize the computer program, Summit Ave. has one of the largest weekly attendance rates for East St. Louis Churches. Of the 400 church members (It consists of around two hundred females, and two hundred males and teenagers), approximately 200 attend weekly service. The majority of regulars are women and children under eighteen years old.

II. Summary of Organization’s Vision, Mission, and Goals

(1). Summit Ave. Baptist Church’s vision and mission is to teach based on the word of truth and reach the unsaved. Their overarching mission is to achieve the kingdom of God on Earth.

(2). Their main goal is to help local lower income residents. They may not be able to bring people out of poverty, but the do believe they can help people through education and the establishment of a constructive mind set. And when individuals can improve their lives, their communities improve as well.

One way Summit works toward this goal is teaching people how to get jobs by showing them how to fill out applications and how to dress and speak for applications. The new computers will support this job program by providing a place for local residents to create resumes, apply for jobs online, and gain basic skills. Additionally, the computers will used in Summit Ave’s programs for youth who will be able to work on homework, do research, and learn basic computing skills.
