Overview of Organization
History of Organization
Second Chance Shelter was founded in 1985 by Ministers United Against Human Suffering. The Director, Sharon Jackson, had been there since 2000, but departed on December 1, 2008 at the end of her contract. At the moment, it is not known whether the shelter is in the process of searching for a new Director. In the interim, it appears that two employees of the shelter, Ricky and Nikki, are keeping things running. The shelter experienced a significant financial setback in 2003 when they lost the support of their primary funding source which was the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross. This is the second lab to be installed by GSLIS students at the shelter. We believe that the first lab was installed in 2001. It is not clear how long the computers from that lab remained online and functioning.
Summary of Organization’s Vision, Mission, and Goals
Second Chance provides meals and housing for families for up to 90 days. The ultimate goal of Second Chance is to assist their residents with developing a range of life skills through employment and computer training referrals, housing referrals, a parenting skills program, counseling, and assistance with financial management.
