Problems and Solutions

Problem:  How do we keep the computers from crashing?

Solution: Using Linux Mint and Firefox will help block viruses, etc., from finding their way onto the computer.  We do not want to allow users to save documents to the computer once they log out, and we are still trying to come up with a viable solution.  One thought is to show people how to upload their documents to Google Docs before exiting the computer.  This allows them to save their work someplace other than the computer’s hard drive.

Problem:  We do not want users saving their documents to the computer hard drive, so what can they do?

Solution: Google Docs.  Clients need to be able to save their documents — resumes, cover letters, homework papers, etc. — somewhere other than RUM’s computers and in an inexpensive and portable manner.  We think Google Docs is the answer to this problem.  They can temporarily save their documents to a file on the computer, then upload that document to their own personal Google Docs account.  Any documents saved to Google Docs can be accessed anywhere by the individual.  To do this, users first need to create their own gMail account.  From there, they can save to Google Docs. To wipe the computer, we are working with Walker to create a script to run daily.

Problem: Downloading educational programs to the non-admin account.

Solution: Temporarily changing the non-admin account to an admin account in order to download the games. After downloading the games, we changed the account back so the general user would no longer be able to download programs.
