Plan of Execution

-need to visit RUM to look at potential lab sites
-find out what RUM has and what they need
-assign someone to be the contact person for our project group
-determine user needs
-sanitize donated computers and install operating system & additional programs
-create tutorial to leave with Ms. Irwin
-set up computers and install network

The Steps the Organization Needs to Accomplish Prior to Computer Delivery

The most important thing that the organization needs to do prior to delivery is to let the group project members know the exact location of the lab. There were two possible rooms that we were shown by Ms. Irwin during our site visit. One of them is fairly small and would accommodate six or so computers. The other was very large and would comfortably accommodate at least six machines (or more). Until we know which location will be used, we cannot accurately estimate the number of machines that we will be able to set up or determine the physical layout of the lab.

The Steps the Project Team Needs to Accomplish Prior to Computer Delivery

At the site

- once the location of the lab is decided, measure dimensions of the room to determine how many computers can be comfortably set up in the designated location
- sort through available desks, tables, chairs, etc. available to furnish lab and determine which pieces will best meet our needs
- determine whether there are printers available for lab and test to see if they are working
- sketch the layout for the lab and determine distance between computers for the purpose of making cables

In the lab

- select PCs to be used for the lab
- sanitize hard drives of donated computers
- install Linux Mint OS and Firestarter firewall
- perform additional customization of PCs to include software, desktop appearance, parental control software (on designated children’s computers)
- define and configure authorizations for levels of access (administrator, user, etc.)

Potential Risks That Might Hinder Fully Accomplishing the Plan

Potential Risk #1
After our discussion with Ms. Irwin, one of the potential risks/problems might be the physical location of the laboratory. If the current repair work or the remodeling of potential locations does not go as planned, the project plan could encounter delays.

Potential Risk #2
A second risk is that the executive director will continue to change his mind about the lab location and will want to move it once it’s been installed.

Potential Risk #3
We may have a difficult time hooking up to the wireless network already in place.

Potential Risk #4
The wireless routers and hubs provided by RUM may not work or we may not be able to figure out how they work since the router instructions are completely in Japanese.

Potential Risk #5
We may overload the circuits since the designated computer room has very few outlets and we will need to load up the power strips provided.
