Computers

Remember to pack at least eight keyboards and eight mice. Make sure that there are an even number of power cords for monitors and CPUs. The power source in Sao Tome and Principe is 220 volts and the plugs are European in style; so adapters will be necessary but may be purchased there.

I’ve taped numbers to the top of the Optiplexes so that we can keep track of what has been done to each via this wiki.

Software

Deep Freeze Summary

Description.
Deep Freeze is software created by Faronics. It allows the return of a standardized computer configuration by rebooting, no matter the changes made by the user. It is commonly used in university or library computer labs and other environments where multiple users have access to the same workstations.

Versions.
Faronics currently markets five versions of Deep Freeze: Standard, Enterprise, Mac, Server Standard, and Server Enterprise. They are also gauging customer interest in a Linux server version.

Pricing.
Faronics offers a “Library/Non-profit” pricing plan which is very attractive. For just $281, they offer the software, 10 licenses for the individual workstations (min number), and one year of maintenance support. Three years of maintenance support pushes the cost to $340. This maintenance support includes toll-free tech support, updates, ability to purchase more workstation licenses at our original price, and other benefits.

Possible use of Deep Freeze at Sao Tome National Library.
I think purchasing Deep Freeze for the project would be beneficial for two primary reasons. First, there is a lack of sophisticated technical support available on-site. Second, the computer labs will be used by novice users. The combination of a lack of tech support and users new to technology could mean the workstations quickly become bogged down with spyware, viruses, malicious downloads, etc. Deep Freeze would allow a return to the original configuration with only a reboot. Although the minimum purchase of 10 workstation licenses may be viewed as excessive at this point in the project, it can also be thought of as an investment. Since the project’s intention is to augment the original computer lab during the summer 2007, buying the extra licenses now will save money in the long run, rather than making two smaller purchases.

eGranary

eGranary, the internet in a box, is a program that captures websites and saves them to a hard drive. We have requested an eGranary hard drive for the National Library.

We need to find appropriate content for the server.

A Purchase Order for an eGranary Hard Drive has been sent to the proper authorities at the University of Illinois. If and when the hard drive arrives at GSLIS, we will send the hard drive to Sao Tome, where it will be hooked up to the Linux-based Server.

Koha

Koha, an open-source integrated library system, has been installed on two computers. These computers will act as the server for the network, allowing the system to be run off all computers. As two hard drives are configured for an Ubuntu Linux-based Koha server, we have a spare in case of difficulty.

Koha has the following features:

*Acquisitions
*Catalogue
*Circulation
*Members
*Authority
*Reports
*Parameters

Interface is available in French and English.

When interface is available in Portuguese, we will make contact with the proper officials in Sao Tome.

Where possible, we have configured the software with Portuguese as the preferred language or installed Portuguese versions of the software (Open Office). Windows has also been configured with Sao Tome and Principe as its location, which has moved the time ahead by six hours. *Portuguese Language Interface for Windows 2000 is available from Microsoft. We should first see if this is available from the Government of Sao Tome.

Firefox currently supports Brazilian Portuguese in its current version. Its Portuguese Portuguese version is not yet available. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html. Update: *Portuguese Language Firefox was loaded onto both the Windows machines and the Linux servers.

Open Office supports both Brazilian and Portuguese Portuguese. http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html. Update: *Portuguese Language Open Office was installed on the windows machines.

A UI professor of Portuguese, Ana Clotilde Thome-Williams told me that the Portuguese spoken in Sao Tome is closer to that which is spoken in Portugual rather than Brazil.
