Techsoup and product keys
Hello, Ms. Covington.
I wanted to further explain what Mt. Joy needs to do in order to get Windows XP from techsoup.org.
You will need to order 6 copies of the Windows XP Professional upgrade, at $8 each for a total of $48. In purchasing these upgrades, you’re buying 6 license keys for the product, which will allow you to legally run Windows XP as your operating system (rather than the older Windows operating systems which are currently running on the computers we have for you). When purchasing these licenses, you’ll have the option of receiving the installation media (which we assume is the installation CD) shipped to you free of charge. While we have copies of the installation CDs here, we suggest that you elect to have the CDs sent to us (Martin Wolske’s address is given below). When we come to set up the lab on December 4 and 5, we’ll bring everything with us to pass on to you.
We don’t know whether you will receive the product installation keys (the licenses) in an e-mail or in the mail with the installation media. Either way, we will need those installation keys in order to install the Windows XP operating system. If when going through the ordering process it sounds like the license keys are going to be sent through the mail, please have them sent to Martin Wolske (c/o Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 501 E. Daniel St., Champaign, IL 61820).
Additionally, it appears that you’ll need to register with techsoup.org in order to order through them. We don’t know if you’ll need to send them documentation verifying your 501(c)3 status.
We have one more question for you. Would you like to use Microsoft Office (available through techsoup.org for $16, and you would need to buy 8, for a total of $128) or Open Office (free)? If you’d like to go with Microsoft Office, you can order it at the same time you order the Windows XP operating system, but this is not a priority at this time.
Response
Thank you, I will follow up once the order is made. If I need help I will contact Jill.
Thanks,
Arlene
Response
Hi, Ms. Covington.
I just wanted to check in with you to see how the ordering process is going. We’d like to begin installing the operating systems this Friday, so we’ll need the keys as soon as possible.
Response
I am somewhat confused, in your previous email the date for installation was Dec. 4th and 5th. We have a meeting Saturday morning to finalize things. Please explain further what you mean about needing keys as as soon as possible?
Thank you,
Arlene
Response
Hi, Ms. Covington.
I’m sorry for the confusion. By keys, I mean product keys– for the Microsoft XP operating systems that you are ordering. We need the product keys to install the operating systems on the computers.
Response
Thank you for the clarification. I will forward that information as soon as I have it.
Thanks,
Arlene
