Mt. Joy Update 11/21/09

Hello!

Here are some updates for our computer lab:

Coming down to see you:
We will be arriving in Edwardsville on December 4th around noon and staying until 5. On Saturday, we will be there around 8:30 until we finish. We would like to spend some time with you to go over how the computers work and how to move them around. We are going to be having other students from our class help us set your computer lab up and do the wiring.

Things you need to do before our arrival:
1. Drill 1/2″ holes in the floor of the office and conference room to allow for wiring. See the “networkingplanmap.doc” for an approximate locations of where we will be putting our outlets (and hence where you should drill your holes).
2. Get tables and chairs
3. We would like to make sure that our wiring is going to be able to go through your drop ceiling in the basement. Could you take a look and make sure that the wall that separates the smaller rooms from the main room in the basement does not extend up through the drop ceiling? If it does, then holes will need to be drilled through that wall to accommodate the wiring.

Windows XP: We have gone ahead and started installing XP because Martin has assured us that you have purchased the XP keys. You should be receiving stickers that we will need to put on the computers when we arrive.

Microsoft Office versus Open Office:
We still need to know your decision on getting Microsoft Office versus Open Office. We will proceed with installing Open Office on Monday (11/30) if we don’t have an answer about this. You could always purchase Microsoft Word in the future.

Wiring Plan:
Attached I (Jill) have compiled a wiring plan for the labs. Included is a map (networkingplanmap.doc) of the approximate locations of all your “wall track sets,” a break down of what is needed by each wall track set (networkingplan1.doc), and a chart breaking down the quantity (quantifiables.doc) needed of each piece of hardware. The quantifiables.doc also includes links to Lowes, giving you examples of what you need to buy. The hardware will cost about $135.

I have done my best to explain in the networkingplan1 document what is needed, but we are open to going shopping for the hardware when we arrive. That way we can discuss the hardware and other options that you have (which is much easier to do in person, rather than by email!).

We will be providing the actual wires and switch.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Feel free to call.
