Problems and Solutions
Problem Description
The printer we originally selected was not compatible with Windows 98.
Solution
We first searched for drivers, since many of the drivers claimed to be for Windows 98. However none of them were, so we decided to go with another printer. We were able to go to Staples and exchange the incompatible printer for one that was compatible with Windows 98.
Problem Description
We had a lot of start-up errors as computers would not save date and time or drive settings.
Solution
We installed new CMOS batteries in the computers with this problem, and this fixed it.
Problem Description
We had problems getting the internet to work on several computers, which even when they claimed to have the correct driver and be configured properly.
Solution
After fighting with drivers for awhile we installed new NICs on the troublesome computers and had no problems– potentially those drivers were better configured for Windows 98, since we’d initially installed random NICs out of the box into 3 or 4 computers that had come without them.
Problem Description
Computer 6 worked fine one day, and would not turn on the next.
Solution
Tried putting in new power supply. Eventually we found one that worked but then would not turn on again. Then unplugged everything and plugged in one at a time until it stopped working. It didn’t appear to be anything in particular so we scrapped it.
Problem Description
No internet at site.
Solution
We came in prepared that this would not be the case and did what we could.
