Solutions and Problems
- Several computers failed initial scrubbing.
- Video driver
- Extra HD in A was recognized rather than HD on inventory; it was small, so fdisk wouldn’t partition it. This extra HD was removed.
- Troublesome CD drive in D. Anna replaced it, but then BIOS wouldn’t recognize it. Had to disconnect ZIP drive. Drive still reading as “not ready” even though BIOS recognized it after ZIP disconnected.
- NIC was suddenly unrecognized by one of the computers, and we couldn’t find a driver for it. We replaced the NIC several times. In the end, we discovered that Win 98 Internet driver updates had caused the problem and did not download these updates on the remaining computers.
- At the site, we had a very small networking issue with IP addresses and computer names. We had inadvertently given 2 or 3 of the computers the same name, so we renamed all “LovejoyA”, “LovejoyB” etc. The we could not get several computers to release and renew their IP addresses; two had the same address, and one, for whatever reason, was not on the same network as the others and so could not ping any other computers. Martin said that once Lovejoy had an Internet connection, the router would assign IP addresses to the computers and this would no longer be a problem. It would only affect filesharing, which the network is not set up to do, and print sharing (but only until the Internet router was attached to the switch – right?).
- Also at the site, we had to modify our initial lab design. The pastor did not want to put tables along the entire north wall, so we had to scrunch the computers together, allowing users much less space than we would have liked. Only 9 computers would fit in the space, so we left the tenth as an extra that could be swapped in, should one of the other 9 have a problem. They also had no Internet or printer, so we were not able to assist them with enabling these desired lab functions.
- Other – Getting the initial proposal to Lovejoy. It took 3 or 4 weeks and 3 different methods (email, fax, snail mail) to get the proposal to Pastor Turner.
