Organization’s Priorities for Implementation of Technology

DFCC believes firmly in excellence– the lab’s appearance should be neat and professional.

The computer lab will primarily support DFCC’s tutoring efforts for children (planning an after-school program that would be expanded during the summer), adults, and senior citizens. Tutoring needs specifically discussed include reading, typing, basic computer skills, and mathematics.

Other areas that might be supported through software (to be investigated and discussed with organization): history, science, grammar, GED preparation, etc.

Resources Available to Implement Technology at the Organization

Electrical wiring appears to be in good shape
Room for lab has been cleared/prepared
It may be possible to use existing conduits for cabling?  If not they can be used to provide a neat guide to drop cables cleanly from the ceiling.
Human resources (e.g. to monitor lab use– organization has currently decided against filtering software, as lab will need supervision in any case)

Resources Organization Can Provide for Technology Implementation

Tables
Surge protectors/power strips
Internet connection/router (currently being investigated: Satellite or Verizon wireless data service)

Resources GSLIS Will Need to Provide

Printer recommendations?
Computers/monitors
Cables
Software (cannot be Internet-based if reliable broadband service cannot be found; software should be free; software particularly for senior needs should be as accessible as possible e.g. offer large font options, etc.)
Lab posters about computer use, if desired by organization
Direct DFCC towards training resources for their instructors, and to Internet safety information, etc.
