Technology
Resources Available to Implement Technology at the Organization
There is an existing computer lab with 22 desktop computers and 10 laptops. However, three of the desktop stations lack an actual computer, only having monitors and keyboards. Three more of the desktop computers upstairs are judged too old by Christina and she wants them replaced. There are two desktops downstairs that Christina also wants replaced because of age. An additional computer lacks a power supply and whether it would work even if it had one seemed uncertain. Finally, one computer has a virus and Christina believes it needs to be wiped and reprogrammed.
Whether there is a reliable Internet connection also is uncertain. The teens seem to use the computers for MySpace access and playing online games, but how they do so wasn’t discussed.
There are three printers, one connected to the group of three “old” computers, one connected to the rest of the computers that we could not get to work, and one not connected at all.
Resources Organization Can Provide for Technology Implementation
Community Concepts has received a grant that provides for one iMac, but this was not discussed in any great detail.
One other resource Community Concepts does have is Al, the computer instructor. He seemed to understand how to use a Mac and quickly found parallels between iMovie and the editing program currently used.
Resources GSLIS Will Need to Provide
Christina would like nine new computers and any hard drives we can supply. A new power supply is needed, as well as upgrading the lab’s existing Mac (which was brought back to GSLIS).
Christina did not seem to think any new software was needed, but Community Concepts hazy use of existing software may need to be addressed and legal alternatives offered.
