Implementation Plan
Week 2
- Assessed existing computers and did inventory
- Trained community members– Valerie Hych (librarian), Joseph Askew (community member and tech help)
- Demoed various Linux distributions: Puppy, Ubuntu Studio, Linux Mint, Edubuntu. Valerie wanted one version of Ubuntu Studio, three of Edubuntu, and six of Linux Puppy. She wanted to keep Windows XP on the remaining six computers (especially since the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated some of the computers and the XP licenses).
- We left two of our computers: one with Puppy Linux, and one with Edubuntu. We took two of their faulty machines to take a closer look.
Things to do before Week 3
- Reconfigure the two faulty machines that we brought back.
- Get CDs with the appropriate Linux distributions.
- Look for K-12 software that can be included on the Puppy and Edubuntu machines: telling time, reading comprehension, etc.
Week 3
- Gather feedback about how the Puppy and Edubuntu machines that we left worked out.
- Assess how many computers can be reused. There are seventeen machines total, but several don’t work very well. Several also have very limited RAM and hard disk space.
- Update the machines. Add memory to the machines that need it. Reconfigure 6 computers to Puppy Linux, 3 to Edubuntu, and 1 to Ubuntu Studio. We will reinstall Windows XP to 6 of the remaining computers as well as include Magic School bus on several of the machines.
- We will have Thursday afternoon and all day Friday and Saturday to reconfigure the computers.
Things to do before Week 4
- Find extra Microsoft XP software CDs
- Burn extra CDs of Windows Service Pack 3 and .net
- Gather materials to include in the training manual that we’re giving to Valerie
- Find out about getting extra mice, RAM, and hard drives
Week 4
- Address things that weren’t addressed or that develop in week 3.
- Develop training materials for the lab. Discuss with Valerie what materials are most needed.
- Discuss with Valerie and Joseph any problems with the set up from week 3 and either fix problems at that time or make recommendations to future groups. (Note: in the end, we decided to install Puppy on three machines, Edubuntu on four machines, Ubuntu Studio on one machine, and Windows XP on eight of the machines. We did not touch Valerie’s computer, which still has Windows 98).
- Finish connecting computers to printers
- Finish installing XP to Windows machines
- Reassign IP addresses in a logical pattern
- Install a filtering program: OpenDNS (filtering via OpenDNS; ubuntu forums thread)
- Rename all of the computers for continuity and ease of use
Followup
- Develop a plan as a guideline/starting point for future groups.
- Leave tutorials for Linux, general hardware upgrades, troubleshooting, how to use open source software, other training materials
- Valerie has the contact info for the Lewis & Clark Library System http://www.lcls.org/ tech person: Bruce Gates, Technical Support
What’s Left To Do
- Backup and update Valerie’s computer. Although Valerie expressed reservations for changing the way her computer was configured (such that hers was the only computer we did not touch in the lab) she may express interest in having future groups help her reconfigure her computer or at least clean out some of the extra files in her computer and/or upgrade to at least Windows XP (she currently has Windows 98).
- Community training
