Ubuntu Documentation

  • https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ – The community-maintained help site for Ubuntu. This is the standard reference material for Ubuntu users. The information here guides you through the basics of the Ubuntu operating system, and answers many of the most common questions. Also included is a list of other Web sites which provide more Ubuntu help. Before heading to any of the other sites below, start with this one whenever you have a question about Ubuntu.
  • http://screencasts.ubuntu.com/ – This site offers video walk-throughs for many fundamental topics such as file management, installing applications, and connecting to printers. There are also several video “tours” of the Ubuntu operating system and its included applications. The information is mostly written for and prior to the 7.10 release of Ubuntu, but it should look pretty similar to 8.04 (the version of Ubuntu on the Centreville computers). Remember that the pictures in the videos may look different from the images you see on the Centreville computers. This is because your computers were set up to look more like the Windows operating system. The images and some of the program names will be different, but the steps you need to go through and the underlying processes will be the same.
  • http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/ – If you have a more complicated problem with Ubuntu, this site may be of service. It’s a little more technical than the other sites, and can be harder to understand. It also assumes that you are fairly comfortable playing around with computer programs and commands. Check the community forums before coming here.
  • http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ – This is similar to ubuntu-tutorials.com. Both have plenty of pictures to demonstrate what is being done, but expect more than basic computer skills. Use this site when the other ones don’t have the information you’re looking for.
  • http://ubuntuforums.org/ – The place to ask questions not answered elsewhere. Users of the Ubuntu operating system post their questions to the site, and other users provide them with answers. This is a good place to start when you’re stuck on something and not sure what to do next, or if Ubuntu is acting funny. Typically, other users have already had the same problem as you, and so the solution for it should be somewhere on this site.
