Parental Controls Needed for Mozilla Firefox; CAFS IP addresses are dynamic

Solution

Researched parental control options in conjunction with Martin and finally decided to use OpenDNS. Presented this option to our site, and finally installed OpenDNS on all 5 computers. ; set up OpenDNS to automatically check for new IP addresses and showed Kavitha how to refresh OpenDNS IP address information

Problem

Edubuntu Firewall not initially enabled

Solution

Enabled firewall on all 5 computers.

Problem

The ‘dirty’ computer could not install Edubuntu

Solution

Tried installing with a different disk in case the problem was scratches on the disk.  To save time, we chose to use try a new computer rather than change out the CD-ROM.

Add-on disk failed to work

Burned a new add-on disk

All computers had an ‘italc’ error

Solution

Researched the italc program, decided it would not be needed, uninstalled the italc program (shout out to Walker for helping us with this!)

Found two operating systems on the file server

Solution

Wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 2000.

Added drivers, replaced graphics card.

Problem

Edubuntu Window Manager made computers run slowly

Solution

Installed Xubuntu Desktop, a lighter window manger, through the synaptic window manager. This greatly increased the overall speed of the 4 Edubuntu computers.
