During
the cool evenings of October 2002, the white and Bourbon Red heritage
breed (off camera) turkeys huddled together to help keep each other
warm. The Moores monitor the turkeys closely to make sure that the
birds can stay warm at night and cool during the day.
Because
the turkeys are so popular, the Moores request reservations early
for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Call (815) 432.6238 for a reservation
form. (note: turkeys will not be shipped, they must be picked up
at the farm or from the Urbana Farmer's Market)

It takes
two people to move each of the massive pasture pens so that the turkeys
can have fresh organic pasture twice a day. The unique design of these
mobile structures enables the birds to protect themselves from predators,
wind, rain, and the hot sun as necessary, all while giving them plenty
of room to move around or huddle close if the weather turns cold.
This is a far cry from most commercial turkey farms where birds are
packed in high numbers into barns with little or no access to fresh
air, sunshine, or pasture, which can result in them aggressively pecking
at each other.
