Each
batch of laying hens is a different color so that the Moores can
easily tell the oldest birds from the youngest. All lay brown eggs
with bright yellow yolks. This is because they live on the pasture
during all but the coldest months when they have the run of the
poly barn green house. There, they feed on the remnants of the greenhouse
crops and hay until the pasture greens up again. Though their preferred
protein sources are worms and insects they find in the pasture,
the hens receive some grain year-round to supplement their diet.
If you are interested in buying pastured, antibiotic-free eggs from
the farm, call the Moores at (815) 432-6238.
