The Mid-Illinois Readers' Advisory Group was a group of librarians interested in developing their Readers' Advisory skills and in promoting literature and reading for pleasure. Being librarians, we of course had to come up with an acronym to identify ourselves. Hence the name MIRAGe (pronounced "mirage" ...the almost invisible small 'e' at the end is to encourage this pronunciation rather than "my rag" or other creative choices!)
MIRAGe was formed as the result of an October 1993 meeting held at the former Corn Belt Library System Headquarters in Bloomington- Normal, Illinois. Those librarians in attendance expressed interest in forming a group in central/mid-Illinois to provide practical programs, bibliographies, and networking opportunities for librarians working with adult fiction readers' advisory services.
MIRAGe disbanded after our last videoconference in August 2000. It was difficult for many of our members to travel long distances to attend programs. The Internet and technology have provided different opportunities to educate ourselves about Readers' Advisory services. We hope to resurrect MIRAGe in the future.
