San Angel - Winter Trip
12/26/2001 - 1/5/2002

San Angel :      Villagers of San Angel, Quintana Roo, Mexico, population approximately 1,000, hosted the nineteenth winter project of Intercambio Cultural Maya. The 53 participants ranged in ages from 16 through 76, and came from ten states and two foreign countries.

In the clinics:   During the five working days in the medical clinic, the doctors, nurses, medical students, and translators provided basic care for well over 1,000 patients. At the same time, dentists treated 243 patients, doing 183 fillings, 127 cleanings, 139 extractions, and 29 consultations. Participants working in the eye clinic fitted 398 people with eyeglasses. Those working with health education visited 29 homes in the village while conducting 4 classes. Each class provided information on the subjects of dental hygiene, first aid, child health issues, and the effects of germs in the community. The Spanish language version of Where There Is No Doctor, by The Hesperian Foundation, Palo Alto, CA, was distributed to village health care providers.

Construction:   The construction crew, working side by side with the villagers, completed the columns, concrete block walls, and the caps on a building that will be used as a community center. The elders of San Angel plan multiple uses for the building, including using it for adult education, as a training facility for those who work in the local herbal medicine program, as well as a sewing center for the women of the village. The women plan to work in the sewing center to make clothing that can be sold in the urban areas; the proceeds from this activity will contribute to their families’ income.
Rest and Reflection:   After completing the projects, a time was set aside to rest and reflect at El Cuyo, a small village located on the Gulf coast. Time was also spent exploring, swimming, and discussing their experience in San Angel. Before returning to the United States, the group toured the ancient Maya ruins at Ek Balam and stopped briefly in the colonial city of Valladolid on the way back to the Cancun airport.
