The Prairienet Community Network is a community service of the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prairienet
offers free mailing lists as a subscriber-supported community service.
The following organizations may request a free mailing list:
- any organization with a Prairienet Web Hosting account (Information Providers)
- any non-profit organization located in East Central Illinois (non-profits elsewhere in the state may qualify, please email () with specifics before applying for a list)
- any state-wide non-profit organization
- any group with an active iLab
Under the conditions that:
- Listowners agree to abide by Prairienet Mailing List Policies (below)
- Listowners agree that mailing list purpose and content will comply with
Prairienet Acceptable Use and
Commercial Use policies.
- Listowners agree to distribute a fundraising request to their
lists on behalf of Prairienet upon request. Please do not apply for a free list unless you agree to this

keep our list services running and free.]
Prairienet reserves the right to reject any mailing lists requests.
In requesting a mailing list on Prairienet, list owners agree to abide by
all applicable policies.
Listowners are responsible for:
- understanding the basics of list management
- configuring and maintaining their mailing list via the administrative Web interface
- responding to subscribers queries in a timely fashion
- responding to email from the Prairienet List Manager in a timely fashion (3-5 days)
- bringing technical problems with the list to the prompt attention
of the Prairienet List Manager ().
- ensuring the prompt designation of a new list owner should they
decide to give up that responsibility
- ensuring that no one is subscribed to their list without the person's
prior knowledge and consent
All list owners are automatically subscribed to
the LISTOWNERS list, a very low volume announcements-only mailing list.
The Prairienet List Manager reserves the right to:
- lock any list without notice for diagnostic purposes or policy reasons
- become an owner and/or subscriber of any list for troubleshooting purposes
- impose daily message limits or designate digest times, as dictated by system resource usage
Additionally, the Prairienet List Manager reserves the right to
suspend or terminate with due warning:
- lists which are inactive after three months
- lists without an active listowner or
- lists where the registered listowner address does not respond to queries
within a reasonable timespan (3-5 days)
- lists that are not being supported or maintained in a satisfactory manner
- lists attached to iLab sites that are not in active use
- high-volume lists which are found to be placing disproportionate
demands on system resources
Any mailing list and/or listowner(s) found in violation of Prairienet Acceptable Use
or Commercial Use policies (q.v.) may be suspended or terminated without notice.
