Setting up PPP dialup on Windows NT

Windows NT is more difficult to use than Windows 95 and is usually used by
people who a) really know what they are doing or b) pay someone else to
know what they are doing in an office environment. It was made to network
computers together in an office setting. What follows should work for most
users. Our support for NT machines is somewhat limited based on the fact
that only a handful of our users have it.

Step 1

Double click on "my computer" on your desktop, then select 'Dial-Up
Networking. One of two things will happen:

  • If the "Dial up Networking" window opens, with an entry at the top which
    says "phone number to dial":
Choose "new", then skip to Step 3.
  • If you get a small box with two buttons labeled "Install" and
"Cancel" - choose "Install". You may need to insert your Windows NT
Workstation CD-ROM. Continue on to step 2.

Step 2

You will get one of the following messages:

  • If you see "There are no RAS-capable devices to add": you will
need to tell NT about your modem. Choose "yes" when asked if you would you
like to add or find a modem. Run modem detection by choosing "Next".
Follow the instructions including entering your area code when asked. It
should eventually say "Your modem has been set up successfully". At this
    point click on finsh.

  • If, instead, you see "RAS capable devices": Your modem
    should be listed. Choose "OK".

At the "remote access setup" screen, choose "configure" at the bottom of
the screen. Next select "dial out only", nothing else. Then choose "OK".
Select "Network" from the right side of the screen and then TCP/IP, making
sure that nothing else is selected. Choose "OK". Now pick "continue" on
the right side of the screen and restart the computer when prompted to do
so.

*After restart if you had any Windows NT Service Packs installed, you MUST
re-run the latest one you had installed. If you are unsure, you need to
find out. (This information will be in the Event Viewer, if you're familiar with it; look for an event called "event log" around the time of the last reboot.) Restart again.

Double click on "My Computer" and then open up "Dial-Up Networking".
You'll be prompted to add a new phone book entry. Give it a name (anything
you like, we'll call it "Prairienet"). Select "I know all about phone book
entries and would rather edit the properties directly", then select
"finish".

Step 3

On the screen you now have a box with 5 tabs across the top. The first tab
titled "basic" should already be displayed. In the "phone number" field
enter 2391001.

Next select the "server" tab at the top of the box. Make sure TCP/IP is
selected and that "enable software compression" is selected. Nothing else
in that screen should be checked - in particular make absolutely sure that
there is no check beside "enable PPP LCP extensions".

Select "TCP/IP settings". Select "specify name server addresses". Enter
the following numbers on the first two lines:
Primary DNS - 192.17.3.3
Secondary DNS - 128.174.5.58

Select "OK" once these are entered.

Now select the "security" tab. Choose "accept any authentication including
clear text". Then hit "OK" at the bottom of the box.

Another box will pop up asking if you want to connect. Choose "dial". In
the box that appears, enter your user name and password for Prairienet
(user name means the same thing as login). Leave the domain box blank.
Click on "ok" and you should hear the computer dialing and the connection
being established. The box will minimize and become a tiny square with two flashing computers
next to the clock on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Once that
connection is established, you can open up Internet Explorer or Netscape to
surf the internet or you can use any other programs that require PPP
connections. Just open them by double clicking on the icon and you should
be on your way.

Whenever you are done using the connection, you need to remember to
disconnect from Prairienet. It is not enough to close the program that was
using that connection. To disconnect, just click on the flashing computers
down next to the time and choose disconnect. (Shutting down Windows will also disconnect you properly.) If you forget to do this, you
will use up your ppp time for the week.
