GPF helps maintain about a dozen prairie preserves and prairie reconstructions in East-Central Illinois. Most of these sites have one or two volunteer stewards who are responsible for managing these areas. Management includes leading volunteer workdays, leading prescribed burns, and controlling invasive species.

Please note: Many of these areas are dedicated Illinois State Nature Preserves, so they are limited to walking, birding, and photography. However, camping, picnicing, littering, pets, and vehicles are not allowed inside any preserve. All plants, animals, birds, and insects are protected in these preserves, so do not disturb or remove any natural objects including rocks, plants, seeds, or insects.
Much of the site information has been borrowed from "A Directory of Illinois Nature Preserves, Volume 2" which is published by the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. Many of the photographs and plant lists have been borrowed from Ken Robertson's The Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois.
