DAL HITS $53,000 MARK IN RAISING FUNDS FOR NEW BUILDING
The Danville Art League has received pledges and donations of more than $23,000 in its effort to move and turn the vacant Red Cross building into a community art center. Also, an anonymous donor has pledged $30,000 that is contingent on the Art League receiving ownership of the Red Cross building from the Sterling Corporation of Indiana.
The Sterling Corporation wants to build a senior citizens building complex at the Red Cross site at Franklin and Seminary streets. It is awaiting state approval of tax credits for the project and expects to hear word from the state between June 15 and July 1. If the approval is granted, the company is willing to give the vacant building to the Art League.
In the past few months, the Art League has been working to raise an estimated $65,000 to make the new art center a reality. The $65,000 covers moving the building, excavation, building the foundation/utility basement and parking lot, utility hookups and interior rehab.
The Art League currently operates in a crammed 1,100 square-foot building with a single classroom/studio. The vacant Red Cross building has 3,200 square feet and offers multiple classrooms, a studio, office, storage, and gallery space.
In addition to the pledges and donations, several individuals and businesses have expressed interest in providing labor, services and expertise in the Red Cross project. The Art League hopes to raise the majority of the $65,000 by July 1. lf you would like to donate, call fund-raising coordinator Jim Williams at 431-1357.
