The Center for Women in Transition offers a number of programs designed to help women strengthen their self-sufficiency. These programs indude the following:
Assessment and Resource Coordination
Each year CWT receives approximately 350 inquiries from women in need of shelter. Because we cannot accommodate all of our applicants, we established the Assessment & Resource Coordination program. This program deals with processing intake forms and assessment requests, documenting housing need, and conducting follow-ups and wait-list notifications. Coordinators also make resource referrals and help homeless women connect with other agencies.
Case Management & Advocacy ProgramAt CWT we have two full-time advocates who work with both families and single residents. Advocates meet with their clients at least once a week to determine goals, needs and individual progress. Women at the Center work closely with advocates to reach objectives and improve their quality of life. Through the Case Management and Advocacy program, a resident may complete her GED, enroll in a college course, seek job counseling, secure a job, complete a recovery program, pay off debts or learn budgeting skills.
Advocates also help to link clients with medical needs, childcare, financial assistance, housing programs, counseling services and educational opportunities.
We recognize that each woman's long-term goal is to acquire a permanent home with sufficient means to sustain it. We know that the road to this goal will vary for each woman, as will the time it will take for her to achieve it. The Advocates provide the assistance and support to help map out the route and help each woman arrive at her destination at her own pace.
Support GroupAt the Center, we offer weekly support groups for our residents. These sessions provide a forum for women to exchange ideas and build a sense of community. They can also learn about community resources from invited speakers who manage various workshops.
Skills in TransitionAll rcsidents at CWT are required to participate in the 16 week Skills in Transition program. Women participating in the program discuss communication strategies and gather information about thinking patterns. They also learn about responsible decision-making and see how their choices can impact relationships, work situations, and quality of life.
