I need shelter. What should I do first?

At CWT we ask all women interested in becoming residents to call or visit our office and schedule an assessment. When you make an inquiry the attending staffer will proceed by asking you some simple questions about your personal information and current situation. Then they will set up your appointment. If you are unable to access Transportation it is possible for us to conduct the assessment by phone. We cannot consider applicants for available space if they do not attend an assessment, so please remember to keep your scheduled appointment. If you do not have a phone or your contact information changes, we ask that you find a way to alert us so that we can maintain contact. Please note that availability of beds at CWT is unpredictable and the waiting period for an opening can last for days or months. We realize this can be frustrating when you have an immediate need, but we hope that you will keep trying. If you need assistance with a current problem, staff members will be happy to refer you to other shelters in East Central Illinois, or inform you of other resources that may be useful.

What can I expect at my assessment?

The average assessment typically lasts for about 45 minutes. During this time, you will be in an office where issues can be discussed privately. The person conducting the assessment will ask you specific questions in order to get a better understanding of your needs and goals. They will give you information on the challenges of community living, in order to determine if this type of situation will work for you, and they may also provide referrals and suggestions for some immediate resources. Bear in mind that there is a waiting list for CWT admission, and that you will not be able to move in on the day of your assessment. We advise our applicants to leave correct contact information. If this is not possible, we ask that you call on a weekly basis to express your continued interest.

Is anyone ever asked to leave CWT?
