How to Help
Volunteer at St. Jude Catholic Worker House!
Volunteers of all faiths, traditions, and ages are welcomed
for any or all of the following volunteer opportunities.
Soup Kitchen
The Worker House provides a soup kitchen meal seven days a
week, served from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed for food
preparation, serving, and clean-up. You may volunteer for the entire day's
schedule, arriving around 9 a.m. and leaving between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.,
or you may come to help for an hour or two during that time. We currently
need volunteer help on Wednesdays for clean up, and often on holidays
such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, July 4th, etc.
For general information, contact a live-in volunteer: 398-3413.

Cooks and Providers for Soup Kitchen (large groups)
Occasionally a group assumes the responsibility of providing
and preparing an entire Soup Kitchen meal ahead of time. Groups usually come
in the afternoon (or evening) before the date and prepare the food in the
Worker House kitchen. The meal should feed approximately 70 people, so it
is a sizable project, but a fun experience for a group. You may plan your
own menu. You can choose to provide ingredients or the House will buy what
you need with sufficient notice. Sack lunches (for daily Soup Kitchen) may
also be prepared (in an approved kitchen) and brought to the House.
Contact Tim at 398-3413 for information.
Food Storage Volunteers
We need your help to sort, date, and put away food one day
a week, one day a month, etc. We also need volunteers willing to help pick
up food from the Food Bank or from donors.
Contact Tim at 398-3413.

Work Day
On the first or second Saturday of each month, the House holds
a Work Day from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This provides an opportunity to get some
yard work and indoor cleaning, small repairs and other tasks accomplished.
Volunteers may work for an hour or stay all afternoon.
For more information about work days, call Ellen McDowell at
356-7101.
Overnight Volunteer
An overnight volunteer is usually someone who has considerable
experience working at the House. If you would like your name to be kept on
a list as a possible volunteer for overnights, contact a live-in volunteer at 398-3413.
Live-in Volunteer
This position calls for a commitment and offers an opportunity
to live out the Gospels in direct service to the poor. The Worker House is currently seeking
live-in volunteers willing to commit to the community for one to two years as well as for
shorter terms such as a Summer, Spring, or Fall.
Champaign is a pleasant university town. Live-in volunteers
can work part-time or attend classes.
For more information, call Tim Richardson at 398-3413.
