Practice skating, either rollerblading or on ice. Real ice skating is better because some skills, such as the "hockey stop", are different and real ice does a better job improving these skills. The UI Ice Arena is open most of the summer and has several public skate times each week.

House League Ice Schedule
from Oct. 1 - Nov. 17th

If you're a beginner skater consider signing up for the Learn to Skate program at the UI Ice Arena. Courses are offered every semester and during the summer. LTS courses are taught by staff who are oriented toward figure skating but people interested in hockey are warmly welcomed. You'll learn valuable basic techniques and acquire balance and confidence. Even if you can already ice skate, consider signing up for a "Beta" class in the LTS program; in this course you'll spend a lot of time skating backwards, practicing crossovers, using the inside and outside edges of your skates, all of which are very valuable hockey skills.
If you're already an experience skater you might sign up for a hockey camp. The popular Power Plus camp comes to the UI Ice Arena most summers, and the ice arenas in Decatur, Springfield, Peoria and Pekin often have camps.
