Champaign PTA Council Meeting

October 7, 2004

               Bottenfield Elementary School

 

 

The meeting was called to order by President, Nancy Holm at 7:10pm;  she welcomed everyone and introductions were made.

Molly Bentsen (BT Washington), Kathy Dwyer (Council, South Side & Edison), Brian Minsker, (Robeson), Shawn Kennel (Kenwood), Michael Roux (Bottenfield), Suzanne Lee (Franklin), Mary Reger, (Council, Carrie Busey), Katie Rocheford (Council & Central), Kathi Ritten (Dr. Howard), Nancy Holm (Council & Jefferson), Margie Skirvin (Council), Diane Adams, (Stratton), Barb Daly (Bottenfield), Ann Campbell (Council).

 

Beth Shepperd and Greg Novak explained how the wheel rotation model has come about and how it was implemented.  This time was added to the planning time for the teachers to meet with the other grade level teachers and to prepare PEP plans. 

 

Dr. Louisa Sandoval - Director of the ESL/Bilingual programs for Unit 4 Schools explained the programs here in Unit 4.  There were 446 students involved in it last year with 72 different languages. 

 

The minutes from the last meeting in September at Dr. Howard were read, Brian Minsker moved that we approved the minutes with Molly Bentsen seconding.  Minutes were approved.

 

Treasurer’s Report: Tim was absent, but Nancy reminded everyone to get their dues paid.

 

Nancy informed us of the District 10 Dinner/meeting which will be held in Danville on Thursday, October 21st.  Each unit will be receiving something about this soon.  She reminded each unit that dues were due at the State PTA office by October 1st.  Several schools will be holding a mock election on Thursday, October 28, she urged us to contact the administration at our schools about how it will work. 

 

Margie Skirvin told us about the PTA Advocate conference to be held in Springfield on October 21 and 22;  discussion to take place on the funding of schools (HB750).  She informed us that if House Bill 750 becomes law, the Champaign schools could received $11 million more a year.

 

Nancy told us that the school board was receptive to our questions and concerns about the budget and the auditing process.

 

Nancy reminded us of the President’s Dinner that will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 8th at Central High School.  More to information at our November meeting.

 

School Board statement to include a “Thank you” to Beth Shepperd and Greg Novak for coming to the meeting and to Dr. Louisa Sandoval for explaining the ESL and Bilingual programs in Unit 4. 

 

 

Meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM.
