Champaign PTA Council Meeting

November 4, 2004

                     Edison Middle  School

 

 

The meeting was called to order by President, Nancy Holm, at 7:10pm;  she welcomed everyone and introductions were made.

Dr. Margie Jobe, director of the Special Education for Unit 4 was our guest speaker.  She explained to us how it is determined that a students would need IEP (Individualized Education Plan).  She said largest amount of students in Unit 4 are the in the speech and language impairment programs.  She explained how the building support team works at each school.  The district added 150 students with IEP’s in August and September. She also talked about the shortage of special education teachers here and everywhere.   Nancy thanked her for her years of dedicated service to Unit 4 as she will be retiring at the end of the school year.

 

Margie Skirvin made a motion to approve the minutes; Katie Rocheford seconded the motion and it passed.

 

Tim Clark reported that we have $1800 in the bank and that there are still 3 schools that have not paid their dues. 

 

Nancy had surveys from Dawn Schultz on the reading curriculum for middle and high school and she asked if there were parents that would complete the survey.  She also asked for parents willing to serve on a School Bus Safety Committee for Unit 4.  There will be PTA Courses offered here in Champaign on Saturday, January 8th

 

Katie Rocheford passed around a sheet to sign up to help with food for the PTA President’s dinner to take place at Central High School on Wednesday, December 8th.  We will also invite the school board members to join us for the evening.    Reflection projects are due November 12th and Lauren Smith will have them on display at the Mellon Building from November 29 - December 10. 

 

Margie Skirvin talked on the school funding issue in HB750.  82% of the school districts in the State of Illinois are operating in a deficit.  If interested in running for school board,  petitions are available at the Mellon building.  The election will take place in April. 

 

Julie Wallace, Assistant Principal at Edison talked about the PBIS (Positive behavior intervention and support) and how it works and that expected behavior has to be taught. The school board is going to decide whether to continue the program or adopt another one.

 

School board statement will include how PBIS has worked in the schools that have implemented fully and it has help the climate in the schools that are using parts of it.  Budget concerns will also be mentioned and that parents want to make sure the cuts don’t affect the students’ learning.
