Informational Items:
State Membership Dues: A reminder that all dues payments to the
state PTA should be sent by March 25.
State PTA Convention - The 102nd annual Illinois PTA state
convention will be held April 30 - May 2 in Peoria. Presidents should have
recently received a packet of information about the convention. There will
be various workshops, exhibits, and sessions on bylaws, budgets, etc.
Please encourage your members to attend. Your PTA budget may include funds
to pay the registration fee for delegates to attend from your PTA. It is a
great way to learn more about PTA!
Books by the Bushel - The Junior League of Champaign-Urbana is
sponsoring the 8th annual Books By The Bushel on April 2 - 4,
2004 at Pages for All Ages Bookstore. The community is invited to purchase
books at a 20 % discount for school libraries from a “wish list” provided by
school librarians. For more information, please contact Bobbie Jo Kirby at
356-3105.
Calendar Committee Volunteers - Please let me know if you or
anyone in your PTA is interested in serving on the district’s calendar
committee next year.
Grant Writing Workshop - The C-U Schools Foundation is holding
grant writing workshops on April 15, 2004. These workshops are open to all
CU educators and PTAs. This is the first time they have offered this to
PTAs. These workshops will be about grant writing in general and not
specifically orientated to CUSF. I will distribute a flier about the
workshops at our April 1 meeting, or see flyer information below. Call Gail
Rost at 351-7512 if you have any questions or would like to register.
Committee Chairs for next year - Please contact me if
you or anyone in your PTA would like to help with the Council handbook or
Council Reflection entries next fall. Please ask your PTA members at your
next meeting.

Council meeting at Carrie Busey School at 7 p.m. - Mr. David
Malone, Unit 4 Technology director will be discussing the
district’s new website and technology curriculum. He will
also discuss helping PTAs set up their own webpages, so
please plan to have someone from your PTA who is interested
in creating and maintaining your PTA webpage attend the
meeting. In addition, we will be sharing ideas on
activities that worked well for our PTAs this year and
voting on our slate of officers for next year.

We will give a $40.00 MINI-GRANT at the end of each workshop to some lucky
attendee who PRE-REGISTERED! SNACKS!!
Workshop 1(3:30 – 4:30): “The Winning Idea”
Roland Garton, grant writing consultant, will present the very BASICS of
getting started on a grant-writing venture. Topics: What getting a grant
means, identifying a need in your classroom; de-mystifying applications;
turning your ideas into a budget and timeline; and tips for success.
He
will include information about District grant writing policies and
procedures. (Mr. Garton will be available for Q/A during the Workshop 2
time for those who are only attending the first workshop.)
Workshop 2(4:45 – 5:45): "Anatomy of a Grant"
Carol Castellon, University of Illinois, and Judy Beckes, Palestine
Community Unit District #3 will present an intermediate short-course in
grant writing. There will be some overlap of information from Workshop 1.
All grants have common required components with a specific purpose. Twin
sisters with a track record of success in grant-writing share their
strategies. Topics: de-mystifying the application process; finding a
partner; working with more than one grant source; budgeting; matching your
ideas to the mission; tips and more!
