The "Silicon Prairie"

That's the term being used to describe the phenomenal growth rate of Illinois's high-tech corridor. According to techCommUnity, a local organization whose vision encompasses technology, commerce, and community; and whose primary goal is to ensure long-term economic growth:

"Since being named one of the top 10 hot new tech cities in the world by Newsweek magazine in 1998, Champaign-Urbana has continued to spawn successful high-tech start-ups and attract established technology companies to the area. With its two new research parks and programs to support science and technology entrepreneurs, the University of Illinois is setting the stage for Champaign-Urbana's emergence as the next tech boomtown.

Through their participation in and support of initiatives, such as techCommUnity, businesses and organizations such as the University of Illinois, VentureTECH, ITEC, DCCA, and the Illinois Coalition are contributing to this effort. Many are taking the vision one step further by sponsoring their own programs that raise awareness and promote technology education for area citizens. By taking a long-term view, such programs are helping to ensure the economic future of Champaign-Urbana."

And according to the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation:

"There are more than 70 thriving high-tech companies in Champaign-Urbana. Champaign County has a heavy emphasis on computer software and communications companies, due in part to the presence of the University of Illinois. Also present in the community are cutting edge companies in electronics, consulting/professional services, measure/control devices, research and development, biotechnology, advanced materials and computer components."
