Subject:  Fruit Sale
From:  cragsdale@parkland.edu

Thank you to everyone that helped sort and distribute the fruit. All of the fruit was distributed by the end of the last day of pick up and that is really great. Thank you also to the 53 students that sold fruit and added money to their trip accounts as well as the band. I included a note for all customers that if there were any quality issues, that they shouldn't hesitate to call me. I would appreciate it if you would call your customers and be sure they are pleased with the fruit that they ordered.

We ordered the navel oranges late in the season and Central Illinois produce said that there may be some softer fruit. Central Illinois Produce has guaranteed their product and sent extra fruit to account for any pieces that the customer may not be happy with. If you can, please try the fruit that seems soft before assuming that it is not good. The orange quality is determined by the weight of the fruit not how firm it is. A more firm piece of fruit might be lighter in weight meaning that it may be dehydrated.....I am becoming a fruit expert! So far, every piece of fruit we have tried has been very good. But, we want our customers to be happy so that we can be successful again next year.

We extended the sale date this year to give a little breather between the New Orleans Taste at Parkland and this sale and next time, we will try to sell earlier in the year. So, thank you again. Great job selling and please let me know if there is a problem. I will keep the extra fruit through next week.

Auction donations must be pledged by February 15th and in the hands of the AUCTION Committee by the 17th. Special arrangements can be made, especially for fresh-baked items by calling 355-1637 or chargerfundraising@yahoo.com.

We are still in need of the following:

  • Items for the following baskets -- family fun, Illini, New Years Resolution, and Sports other than golf (we have enough golf!!!)
  • Gift certificate ideas -- movie passes, mall certificates (mall and or stores)
  • We also need cups for coffee and other beverages

Subject:  Taste of New Orleans Poster
From:  dodycos@aol.com

Attached is a new version of the poster/flyer for our upcoming "Taste of New Orleans" fundraiser on Feb. 19th.

If everyone (students included) would print out at least ONE copy of the poster and hang it in a public place (restaurants, grocery stores, exercise clubs, book stores, etc.) as you go about your business, we'd be well on the way to having them all over town! (Be sure to ask for permission when appropriate.) Students, we need to have flyers in all the places where Centennial students eat lunch every day!!

If the attachment doesn't come through, you can click here (or cut and paste the address into your browser) for a link to the flyer:

http://www.prairienet.org/centennial-bands/POSTER.pdf

OR, write me back and let me know you need some hard copies, and I will deliver!

We have a GREAT event in the works ... but we need lots of people to attend, and to bid on all the great auction items we have collected. Please help us spread the word by hanging posters, selling tickets (these were sent home in packets with students), and through word of mouth. Thanks!

Subject:  REMINDERS

JUST A REMINDER that we need to receive all students' medical forms before this Saturday's trip to Oblong. These forms contain information that is vital to your child’s safety. If your child was identified as not having returned the form, PLEASE do so as soon as possible. (If you need to know if your child was on this list, please reply to this message and I'll look it up for you.)

Also, don't forget that this Thursday, Oct. 28th, the Centennial Marching Band Awards Concert will be held at the school at 7:00pm. We hope to see you all there!!

Tuesday, 10/26/04
Subject:  Oblong Marching Band Competition

Well, here it is! The final and greatest competition experience for the season - the trip to Oblong. This is the trip that all the kids have waited for, and the last time we went there three years ago was probably the most fun trip of my 4 years as a band booster. It will be an afternoon field show competition and a great night parade!

As usual, we need 10 chaperones to ride with the kids to and from Oblong. It is about a two-hour ride, probably with a stop at a rest area. It shouldn't be an early call time, but it will be a very late night, definitely after midnight. Most of the chaperones' responsibility is making sure that everyone that got on the bus in Champaign is on the bus every time we re-load. And certainly another part of the responsibility is to help keep basic order while enroute. So if you would like to ride the Yellow Limo one more time this season, here's your chance.

And we have one additional need. We need some parents that would be willing to hang out in and around the busses during the band's down time, just to make sure that all the activity on the busses is, shall we say, all that we'd hope it would be. It could be the chaperones that rode on the busses, or it could be parents that might have driven down separately and are looking for a way to help out.

So if you are available and would like to be part of this last great extravaganza for the 2004 season, please let me know. Thanks!

Primelight Studios will be taking band pictures tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 26th. Please be sure to bring your black shoes and socks with you, along with your order form with payment. You'll need to be prepared to dress quickly into your uniforms.

Primelight Studio will be photographing the Band, Sectional groups and individuals (also siblings), on Tuesday October 26 during their band periods. Students should bring home an order envelope this week. Students will dress in uniforms, bring black socks and shoes (they will show), no hats or gloves. All students will be in the group photo, and their sectional group. Those students who wish to purchase individual (and/or siblings) shots will be photographed with their instrument or flag. All students wishing to purchase any photos, must return the order envelope with payment at the time of the photo (make checks payable to Primelight Studio).

Band portraits are taken every other year. Portraits are returned to the school in about 3 weeks. Call Sandi Thomas (359-1161) if you have any questions.

Subject:  Marching Band Weekend!

This is an exciting weekend for the Marching Chargers! Friday night is Senior Night, where seniors and their parents will be honored. Saturday is the University of Illininois band competition. There are several opportunities for parents to be involved, and it will all be fun!

Friday night, the senior parents will be tied up on the field, and there are several who generally help in the pit crew. So if you'd like to help out on the field, we could sure use you.

With regard to the Marching Illini band competition on Saturday, we need bus chaperones (the shortest trip in the season) and also pit crew help. (In past years, the parents of Seniors have been invited to sit in the stands rather than help in the pit crew so that they can enjoy the performance, and we would like to continue that tradition for this year's senior parents.)

If you can help out, please let me know.

Yours in band boosting,
Randy Torbeck

Subject:  Medical Forms

During the past two weeks envelopes were sent home with your children. These envelopes included a fresh copy of our medical forms, our records indicated that your student had not turned in their medical forms to date, and an invoice detailing amounts still due from your child, attributable to band fees and merchandise purchased. It is imperative that both of these items receive your prompt attention. In particular we need to receive the student’s medical form before the competition in Oblong. These forms contain information that is vital to your child’s safety. During a recent trip a student had an allergic reaction. With the information provided on these forms we are able to identify, more quickly, the seriousness of the situation and the appropriate contact.

PLEASE return these forms and any payment due as soon as possible. The competition is in 10 days. I have listed below the students on which we do not have medical forms.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

4) fellowship with like-minded, understanding, committed band parents
5) a chance to snooze on the late-night trip home

Subject:  Opportunities to help at Pontiac!

As you know, this Saturday the Marching Chargers are going to Pontiac for a field show clinic and competition. It will be exciting because the band gets to perform its show twice, once in a clinic and once in actual competition. It's a late start and a late return, but it will be fun.

We have opportunities to help in the pit crew (we will need to do it twice) and also as bus chaperones. The bus chaperone job is a good one because there is no easy way to drive to Pontiac and if you take the Yellow Limo, you can just leave your car behind and save the gas. There is a little work to do on the bus, but not much, and that's pretty much it. It's kind of noisy, but you'll really feel like part of the team!

If you'd like to help, please email me and let me know.

Go Chargers!

Subject:  Medical Sheets

To all Band Parents:

If you haven't returned the completed band fee/medical sheet (it's blue) please do so. There are extras in the band office, or you can download one from the website. We need the medical information (particularly allergies and medications) plus the contact information (so we can telephone parents in an emergency) when we travel to out of town field shows. I don't think we've ever actually NEEDED the information, but we feel more confident if we have the information with us. Our first out of town event is next Saturday, Sept. 18.

Completed forms can be turned in to the band office (the band box built into the counter), or you can give them to Mr. Madden, Mr. Shelato, or one of us.

Thanks,
Janelle Drackley and Karen Ranney, co-presidents

It's fun and exciting! So show your Charger pride and volunteer for pit crew today!

Subject:  Volunteers needed for Charger Band Performances

Hi everyone!

Here we go with a great new marching band season! If you got a chance to see and hear the band at the potluck at the end of Band Camp, you know that this is going to be a great season. Great successes are ahead for this band this year!

The first two events are coming up this weekend - the football game on Friday night and the Labor Day parade on Monday. We need about 10 people to serve as "pit crew" on Friday night, helping load and unload gear for the band and moving equipment (mostly percussion equipment and director's platforms) on and off the field at half-time. On Monday we need walkers to walk alongside the band to get water to them when needed. If you helped at the 4th of July parade, it's exactly the same thing.

If you can help, please give me an email back. For more information, check the website at www.chargerbands.com.

Thanks a lot, and Go Chargers!

Subject:  Charger Band Car Wash!!

The first Charger Band fundraising event of the year takes place this Saturday, August 28th at St. John's Lutheran Church, Mattis & John Streets in Champaign!  The annual Car Wash is a great way to raise funds for the band (and for individual trip accounts), and is always a fun event. We need lots of student and parent volunteers to help. Shift times are 8:30-11, 10:30-1, and 12-2:30.

Due to the timing of this event, you need to sign-up on the internet because there will not be sign-ups at school!  You can sign-up at chargerfundraising@yahoo.com or call Harriet Buscombe at 355-1637. Or, you can just show up! (People who show up without previously signing up will be put to work where they are needed.)

If you did not receive Car Wash information at the pot luck or at registration, you can download it at www.chargerbands.com.  Any money you have raised in advance may be brought with you on Saturday and it will be credited to your trip account.

To sign-up to work click here.

Specify shift, desired job (wash/dry or signs) and if there is someone you'd like to be with.

Thank You to All Participants !

Questions? chargerfundraising@yahoo.com

Polos, picture CD's, promotional items, snacks, and bottled water will be for sale at the car wash.

Charger Band Performance Preview and Potluck
Friday, 8/6/04

Come join other Marching Charger families for a potluck and band preview on Friday, August 6th at 6:00pm.  Be prepared to be amazed at how much the band has learned in one short week.

What to bring:  lawn chairs, tableware, and main dish (pizza, subway or a bucket of chicken are easy and popular.)  Each family is asked to also provide either a dessert or salad/vegetable according to the guide below:

   A-M Dessert
   N-Z Salad/Vegetable

Drinks will be provided.

The potluck will be held north of the student parking lot.  This will be a great opportunity to purchase Marching Charger apparel including hats, sweatshirts, polos, etc.

If it rains there will be a music preview in the auditorium and there will not be a potluck.

See You There!

Subject:  Flames

The flames used for the field show for the last 2 years are no longer needed for performances. They are presently stored in the old trailer that will be used for on-field-storage during band camp. I intend to offload them at my house prior to placing the trailer this weekend. They will eventually be flamed in my burn pile. If there is anyone out there with a need for an unusual lawn ornament, a room screen, or some other interesting use for these wonderful mementos of the recent field shows, let me know and you can come to my house to pick and choose.

If there is anyone who thinks that these should be saved, let me know and I will drop the lot of them off in your driveway.

Dear Members, Parents and Friends,

I would like to inform you that I have resigned from my position as Director of Bands of Champaign Centennial High School. I was offered and have accepted the position of Coordinator of Outreach and Public Engagement for the School Of Music at the University of Illinois. My new job will consist of administrative as well as teaching duties for the School of Music at the U of I.

I am sorry for the late notice on this matter as things were not official until late last week. I have spoken in depth with Principal Dr. Wiegand and Director David Madden regarding the upcoming school year for the Centennial band program. I feel that things are in good hands and that our Principal will handle the interview process for a new director with the utmost care.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support. I leave this position with only fond memories of the opportunities and experiences that my years as a Director of the Bands of Centennial have provided me.

Sincerely,
David Allen

Subject:  Marching Chargers in 4th of July Parade
From:  Randy Torbeck [randytorbeck@hotmail.com]

Hi everyone!  It's exciting to see another marching band season starting!  We will have a great season this year, and the kickoff is the 4th of July Parade! Information regarding meeting places and call times are on the website at www.chargerbands.com.

We will need a lot of parents to provide water for the band as they travel through the parade route. It always gets pretty hot, so if you are available to help, please let me know. I have band polo shirts available if you don't have one, and you would just need some kind of dark blue shorts to complete your 'ensemble' and look just like the band members!

Parents of incoming freshmen are especially invited to come and participate, as it will give you a great idea of the regular marching season will be like. It really is a lot of fun, and you won't want to miss it! And you'll have a great time of fellowship with your fellow band parents!!

Please reply if you can help.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 4th!
