PTA meetings are normally held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the school library or cafeteria.

Please join us for one, some, or all of the monthly meetings! All parents, guardian, staff, and interested community members are welcome.

Meeting Dates 2003-2004:
September 16, October 21, November 18, January 20, February 17, March 16, April 20, May 18

The Booker T. Washington Parent-Teacher Association provides support for students, staff, and administration. After sponsoring an annual fund-raiser, the Walk-a-thon, our PTA provides mini-grants to support curriculum enrichment, publishes our monthly newsletter, and coordinates volunteer efforts. Our PTA also sponsors Book Fairs, an annual Fun Night (for Kids Only!), an annual International Dinner, an Ice Cream Social (to welcome new families), and an end of the year cookout. The involvement of the PTA (along with all parent involvement) is very important in helping us promote a family feeling in our school.

"Tell me, and I will forget;
Show me, and I may remember;
Involve me, and I will understand."

2003-2004 Committees

Badge-A-Minit:
The PTA has its own Badge-A-Minit badge/button maker. Two times a year, student artwork and/or pictures will be available for creating unique and individual badges, magnets, and key chains. These items are prepared based on orders the PTA receives from the families. A flyer is sent out prior to these events explaining the process.  The badges are a great gift for family members and to keep for remembering your time spent at BTW.

Beautification: David Ward (352-3406)
The PTA and BTW staff do a wonderful job of keeping our school and the areas around the school clean and attractive. The beautification committee does small projects around the school such as planting flowers and maintaining the flowerbeds.  When you are at the school, take a closer look! Parent volunteers are needed to help maintain the flowerbeds.

Blue Star Program:
The blue star program is a cooperative effort of the schools and the Champaign Police Department to offer students walking to or from school with a safe place to go.  Champaign home owners who are near a school may volunteer to provide these safe places.  Potential volunteers must fill out a detailed application that is reviewed by the police department.  Once the police department has approved a home for the program, the homeowner receives a blue star to place in a visible window.  These stars indicate to the students that this home is a safe place for them to go in an emergency or when in need of help.  If your children walk to school, please make them aware of this program.  Contact the committee chair for further information.

Book Fairs: Ulanda Hunter
Spring and Fall Book Fairs are held as school-wide events to provide opportunities to buy relevant books for home.  Purchasing books also earns books for the classroom and the library, and money for the BTW book club.  Flyers are sent home with the students before these events to notify parents.  Stop by the cafeteria during the book fair to check out what's new in student reading!  Parent volunteers are recruited to help with book sales.

Campbell Soup Labels:
Families save their Campbell soup labels throughout the year and bring them to their classrooms for collection. The labels are sent to the company and are redeemed for equipment used in the school. It's a great program that provides the school with valuable equipment. Start saving today!

Cereal Box Tops:
Many cereal companies have box top programs that provide rewards to school for saving their tops. Please send any cereal box tops to school.  The money generated from this effort goes directly to the school.

Directory: Linda Dahl
The student directory is your guide to the students, staff, events, and committees that make up the BTW school year. If you are interested in helping with a specific event or on a specific committee, give the chairperson a call.

Family Reading Night: Lupita Patino & Simone Ford

Field Day: Catherine Teague
Field Day is a school-wide track and field competition.  Mr. Hunt, the P.E. teacher, organizes events that the students have practiced throughout the year.  Students compete on a grade-level basis and are given ribbons for placing and participating.  Parent volunteers run the events and provide snacks for each classroom.

Fifth Grade Reception: Simone Ford & Kimberly Berl

Fourth Grade Immunizations:

Fun Night: Laquanda Dukes & Brandy Dukes
Fun Night is a carnival just for BTW students and their families. The fun night is a gift to the students by the PTA. Each booth or game has prizes that the students can win. No one goes home empty-handed, and most students come home with a bag full of prizes.  The doors are monitored so that students can be safely dropped off.  A permission slip must be filled out and returned by the deadline in order to participate.  Many parents are needed to make this evening a success.  Sign-up sheets will be made available for this fun event.

Holiday Staff Luncheon: Lisa Warne-Magro
The luncheon is an appreciation luncheon given by the PTA to the staff of BTW in December. Parent volunteers are needed to donate food, and to help set up, serve, and clean up.

Hospitality: Lori Ryckman
The hospitality committee shows the PTA's appreciation to the teachers and staff of BTW School by providing treats and beverages two to three times a year.  The committee also provides beverages and treats for Open House and PTA meetings.  They also recognize special events in the staff's lives.  Parent volunteers are needed to provide food.

Ice Cream Social: Jill Schreiber (356-7416), Brandy Simmons, & Kali Maturi
This get-together is the kick-off social event for the school year.  It is a great way to introduce yourself to your child's teacher and to meet hte rest of the BTW "family". It is traditionally held at Hessel Park in September.  Parent volunteers are needed for setup, serving, and cleanup.  Toppings are traditionally provided by the families.

International Dinner & Children's Day: Lisa Warne-Magro & Trinidad Teacalco
International Dinner is a school-wide, family-oriented evening meal with great food from around the world and student entertainment that represents the international scope of BTW's curriculum.   Held in the school gym, each family brings a dish to share.  After the meal the foreign language and music teachers direct a student performance for everyone's enjoyment.

Library Coordinator:
The library takes a lot of effort to maintain and provide adequate services to the students.  Recognizing this, the PTA has a library coordinator that calls from a library parent volunteer list to come to the library and help out as needed.

Lunchroom Coordinator:

Newsletter Editor: Sue Kapacinskas (355-3921)
The PTA puts out a parent produced monthly newsletter.  The newsletter provides parents with important dates, monthly information from the principal, PTA meeting minutes, and most importantly, information about the activities in each classroom.  If you have something for the newsletter, contact the Chairperson.  Parent volunteers are needed to report, write, and organize this monthly newsletter.

Open House: Jenna Weglarz-Ward (352-3406)

PTA Building Council Representative:

PTA Council Representative: Cyndy Lammert (351-2085)

Reflections: Cyndy Lammert (351-2085)
The National PTA Reflections Program was developed to encourage creative expression among students in literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.  The student's task is to use the yearly theme and develop an entry for this program.  Entries are judged on expression of the theme, originality, creativity, and artistic merit.  There are two age divisions:  K-2 and 3-5.  A flyer with additional details and instructions is sent home in the fall.  The entries are judged and awards are given.  Those that reach the state and national level are displayed at public education events and are part of the state and national PTA traveling exhibits.  Please encourage your children to express themselves and have fun!

Registration: Molly Bentsen (359-0128) & Mary Logsdon
The PTA assists the school staff with advanced registration of students.  This one-day event is usually held about 3 weeks before school starts.  The PTA provides parent volunteers to work at each class station, sets up the gym into stations for each class, assists the school staff during the registration day, and assists the parents with their specific registration paperwork and questions.

Share-A-Book: Catherine Teague
This program allows parents to supplement the school library with books the parents personally choose from a list provided by the school librarian, teachers, and school staff.  After the books are adopted, the PTA orders the books and places a seal inside the book recognizing the family that provided it.  The books are then turned over to the school librarian.

Sweatshirt and T-Shirt Sale: Suzanne Lee, 359-2606
Show your school pride! Flyers are sent home with the students requesting orders for sweatshirts and t-shirts.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon: Yumiko Stewart (355-5774)
Parents help PTA sponsor a luncheon to thank our teachers and staff for a job well done.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week: Yumiko Stewart (355-5774)
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week provides the PTA and parents with an opportunity to say "thank you" to the teachers and staff that do so much for our children.  During the week there is a teacher luncheon.  Parent volunteers are asked to help set up, serve or clean up, as well as provide the food.  The teachers and staff also receive a small token of gratitude from the PTA.  Traditionally, during this week, students give their teachers small gifts and tokens of appreciation as well.  These can be either purchased or homemade, though the most precious gifts are those that cost nothing and are made by the students.  Everyone's support is necessary for the success of this event.

Translating: Suzanne Lee, 359-2606

Walkathon: Julie Healy (359-5009), Ed Hawkes (352-4653), & Jiyoung Yoo
The Walkathon is the main fund-raising activity of the PTA.  Students solicit donations from friends and relatives who wish to support our efforts.  The money all goes back into supporting the school and its activities.  Each teacher receives a portion of the funds to enrich their classroom.  The student and classroom that walk the most laps receive prizes.  Every student receives a T-shirt.  There is an annual design contest for the t-shirt logo that every student can enter.  Parents are encouraged to attend, participate, and volunteer to help.  Besides being a fundraiser, Walkathon promotes fitness and school spirit.

Website: David Ward (352-3406)

Year End Picnic: Angela Clark
The year-end picnic is a family celebration to remind everyone of the successes of the completed school year.   PTA provides hot dogs, buns, condiments, and drinks, with families bringing a dish to share and table service.  This event is held in May at Hessel Park.  Parent volunteers are needed to help set up, cook, serve, and clean up.

VIPS Volunteering: Shauna Carey
VIPS are Very Important Parents, who volunteer to help teachers at school or from home.
