Altrusa Club of Champaign-Urbana

Mission Statement

To be the model service organization whose members

enthusiastically promote altruism, leadership, and friendship.

Altrusa International, Inc. of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois was organized in 1950. The C-U club has a rich tradition of developing and carrying out innovative service projects. The club meets on the first Tuesday of the month to discuss business and on the third Tuesday for dinner and a program.

Some early accomplishments were baking and sending brownies to armed services in Korea and in Viet Nam, donating materials to the Hazel Ingerich Park, and giving a piano and large print books to Skelton Place, the first low income public housing in the County.

The C-U Club was the first organization to provide recognition to women athletes by hosting the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Women's Sports banquet in the mid seventies.

For Make a Difference Day 1997, three of our members designed a web page for other Altrusa Clubs across the USA to share project ideas that promote literacy by registering and reporting their success via the Internet. In recognition of this initiative the Paul Newman Foundation funds awarded the Altrusa International Foundation $2000.

C-U Altrusans held an outstanding Robert Burns gastro literary affair complete with a feast of haggis, cockaleekie soup, neeps and tatties.  All this was accompanied by wine, spirits and a wee bit of poetry, prose and song to honor the spirit of Robert Burns.
