This bibliography attempts to update Lebot's 1992 book Kava: The Pacific Drug, which contains a bibliography through 1992. Although I focused on articles appearing after 1991, in several cases I included older material that was lacking in Lebot's bibliography. Some of the citations are for book reviews and are followed by the word "review." Most of the citations are in English, several are in French and German.

Keywords include: kava, kava kava, kawa, and piper methysticum.

I searched the following electronic databases for this compilation of citations:
Aticle1st, MEDLINE, PsychInfo, AnthroLit, Sociofile,  UnCover, and Hawaii Pacific Journal Index (a custom version of UnCover devoted to Hawaiian and Pacific Journals.)

One problem I encountered was that the same database, when accessed by different means, gave different results for the same search. For example, when accessing MEDLINE through OCLC's
WorldCat database, I did not retrieve as many articles as when I directly accessed MEDLINE
from the University of Illinois reference room terminal. The discrepancy may be due to the OCLC version not being as current.
In addition to finding articles that were written in other languages, I often came across citations that were not even in English, but clearly contained the word "kava." In many cases, a search for the word "kava" was likely to bring up the name of a researcher or author.
While print indexes and abstracts are a useful source of information, they are not as quickly
updated as their electronic counterparts. Unlike electronic databases, however, searchers
who use a print index, such as 1994 Social Science Citation Index, will know that anyone
consulting this same print index will find identical information.
